By the way @Hudson I think the reason so many people looked down on AFterf1sh at launch (for context) is the owner was someone who'd bounced between trying to staff only to badmouth everyone and run off to make his own community when he didn't get it. This happened three times prior, as well as him having a history of buying stuff from Gurrazor simply because he could afford it.

So when he chucked up the forums within a week of LP dying it was seen as him trying to take advantage.

That reminds me.

I used to be staff on some other servers and this one stuck out.

I remember Hammerfall Gaming being really big on donation rewards.
Their 40k rp though was fun but it got corrupted by donation perks.

People on nebulous think premium lockers are bad but there's much worse :/

and hammerfall star wars

You can quote me if you want, I was there on the launch day for it.

Novabox tried to emulate SCG's business-oriented mindset and had some galling gameplay choices (Air Exchange was a thing in-lore, meaning gasmasks were required for daily life) and thus the whole 'need filter to live' mentality ensured that any semblance of staying outside was quickly scrubbed for practical reasons, which quickly fostered circlejerks. Killing someone became as easy as just slipping their mask off or breaking it out in the streets.

Not to say that you'd want to stay out in the map, anyway. It was a cobbled together shitshow, Kermerd (aka Dremek) had ripped off a dozen maps (even i17 prefabs) and shoved it all together, resulting in the abomination known as City 2. It's so terrible that despite a dozen 'workshop made' fixes I'm still able to abuse certain entities to kill people, should someone have the terrible idea to actually host it. Even the map elevators were a prefab taken from a 2011 gamebanana upload.

Kermerd didn't know how to run it and his chosen 'staff team' were inept, if not downright malicious, and the CivPro faction turned out to have been plucked from day one supporters so naturally it was downright ridiculous as well.

Nothing notable happened on launch aside from a small gathering on a main road, who were quickly - and pretty much instantly - gunned down by a throe of bored cops. I left soon after, and from the first hand accounts I heard, the server was dead within the week population-wise and lost all traction.
i remember seeing novabox and the idea of it being 'as you go' rp rather than people bitching to the admins which really appealed me at the time, circa 2014 or 15 or something - i never got around to playing it though and from the sounds of it it sounds like a i dodged a bullet

zombine was the only reason i'd found neb as novabox had died years prior as i decided i wanted to try hl2rp again, and having one of the boys in the old tfa circlejerk discord pre drama and subsequent nuke meant that i know it had solid foundations and cool content as we all thought zombine was dope at coding and making shit look pretty

nebulous being the successor to another server i'd played beforehand in 2014 ala lemonpunch was just the icing on the cake

phl2rp on tnb was really fun, had a few short and sweat characters that i liked
a young slav kid who got killed for shooting someone who spooked him
a big lovely giant type asian white forest guard who died trying to be a hero
and finally just a generic run of the mill resistance type who i made just to be able to play on the last day

all in all the inbetween was fun and the events were fun

General average player statistics for Garrys Mod peaked in 2014-15-16 and are currently a fair bit lower aswell. Game might just be getting old. Not that I think there's currently a good alternative for the same amount of variety and content, probably wont be dying any time soon, but people still get bored.
