now out on pc
good mix of the mad max game and last of us very epic
recommend playing keyboard and mouse for the shooty bits and a controller for the biking bits
no its great fun you should try it. takes a while to open up but when you get stuck into the gameplay loop you'll appreciate it; i do anyhow. basically my idea of a perfect zombie game.
reminds me of a crowcat video where everything is plucked from the worst possible isolated clips of the internet
literally never had an issue with it beyond weirdly scripted sequences of when you send folks back to camps
also npcs are more often than not liable to see you in situations where they shouldn't rather than the points in this video. guy playing on baby mode easiest difficulty? i dont know. they also flank cover from multiple directions, im particularly impressed with grenade usage and zombie movement
even if it was half this bad once despite being very nitpicked the active pc release version is fire

honestly the game looks perfectly fine, i'll probably buy it eventually, i just like watching people nitpick because im an asshole
open-world action games are so common in triple A because they are actually pretty fun, i just wish they could do something a little more interesting with them

honestly compared to other open world games i really enjoy this one, every activity you do contributes to something and it feels very rewarding to actually go around doing stuff as opposed to many games where the side stuff is so dejected from the rest of the game
i once said my ideal zombie game would be one where you're just a guy running stuff to keep a camp going while having a bunch of roleplaying elements and having to dole out the limited food + upgrading the camp overtime; this is not quite that - but it still manages to incorporate some of my favorite elements of the mad max game with a really enjoyable driving system and intuitive design + likeable characters.
for example- noise attracts zombies, i cleared out a big camp by attracting a massive horde of them and throwing a noise generating device straight into the camp, they tore straight through it. or when you kill a bunch of people in an area without headshotting them and you come back outside to see half the men are zombies eating their then-comrades. small details make it really engaging.
i had very low hopes going in because the gameplay i saw looked pretty shit but it turns out i was just watching one of the stranger missions, the gameplay loop is a million times more satisfying, wish there was more bike upgrade options with upsides and downsides rather than only being better; just like how in mad max you could have a v6 or a v8 or whatever and have to mind gas consumption rates against weight; also i'd like outfit choices (theres a good story reason there aren't any) but aside from that very solid.

also u can tab in and out as many times as you want never had it crash on me even though i ran an 8 hour session once, very stable. additionally going from open road to areas with a lot of zombies does not tank whatsoever. games like this, gta v and rdr2 that are designed for consoles are so well optimized.
i havent enjoyed games in a long time so getting into this and actually having fun with it might just be making me biased
Days Gone is a really fun game with a really fun gameplay loop that has no idea what the message of its story wants to be. Full disclaimer, I still think it's worth the price but I got really annoyed with a few story aspects.
I genuinely believe people overstate their enjoyment of this game for the simple fact that it came out when The Last of Us 2 did and as a big fuck you they overhype the competitor to something they didn't like.
Also the fact there's obviously spaces in the story where you were meant to have been able to make choices, but they were cut out and one is chosen for you, which I think might've been a good thing since choices that add up to the same ending are usually quite bland.
REVIEW TIME!!!!!!! (story only, the rest of the game is absolutely solid - love the gameplay loop)
I know this is a long one but I'd really enjoy if one of ya'll who's actually played the game would quote this and talk to me about it because I think I'm going mad crazy because the narrative is being praised and it's got like 90% user reviews.
READ IF YOU HAVE EITHER PLAYED THE GAME ALL THE WAY THROUGH OR YOU DONT CARE TO PLAY IT!!
Quick recap - you're Deacon St. John, it's been 2 years since the ZOMBIE(freaker) APOCALYPSE and you're trying to find her again. Simple enough, so you spend the whole game having flashbacks - flashbacks where you and your then-wife have had a really shitty chemistry - everyone of your now-friends are trying to help you move on. People like Boozer and Rikki, who are both likeable characters.
Boozer ends up losing his arm, this really gruff biker man who's more like a big brother starts getting suicidal and really not pleasant, you help him find a reason to live despite having nothing to live for; in return, he tries to get it into your head that it's time to move on. So far I'm absolutely hooked, a few hiccups, but most of them pertain to Sarah, the message of the game is clearly structured.
Over time you find more and more clues pointing to the fact Sarah might actually be alive, a slow-burn of Deacon's mental state, about how he'll cling to any chance he'll find her again no matter how small, again we're ramping up and getting even more engaging. This triade of him going out of his way to do dumb shit that endangers him and hurts his friends to find someone who is most certainly dead - he goes and talks to the gravestone that isn't even placed over her body, he burns down the church he was married in.
and then.... instead of this beautiful triade about loss, moving on and finding new reasons to live that the whole game has been pointing towards.... you actually find her???????????????????????????????????????????????????
it's fucking stupid. The whole flow of the story leads you down this path of understanding and sympathizing with the character, about his struggle to move on, and the whole point of the first two arcs of the narrative are completely torn down. You do actually find her, you have a lackluster first introduction and you're thrust into what is easily the cheesiest part of the game.
So I stop and I think to myself, right - so the reason the reunion is so bad is because she's moved on when you haven't, because people change. So the rest of the game I'm thinking she'll have moved on to another guy, that she'll not be the person you and Deacon so clearly want her to be, this personification of his lost hopes and dreams. I see what's going on, this makes sense again - alright, previous story would've been cooler and still feels completely discarded but it can still be that.
You go on to run errands for her and the new camp she's a part of; then you start hooking up with her... she starts acting as boringly "perfect" as she did before...... nothing fucking changes; she IS THE PERSONIFCATION OF WHAT YOU WANT - it's literally go save the princess, go back, eventually the camp turns schizoid and locks her up.... so you bust her out- but you fail, she's now locked in this dungeon and you think she might be dead, I've completely lost the story here, I'm still at a loss to WHAT IT'S ACTUALLY TRYING TO TELL ME. So this big camp she's a part of goes crazy and starts hitting other camps, you go back and liberate Sarah - and that's it. That's the whole game.
It's got like 90% on user reviews, got a million reddit and metacritic posts praising the writing but all I see is this blank canvas of a B-Movie that could've been something spectacular by making it less of what it is. It's such a shame that they had all this groundwork and still let me down twice, I really don't get it. Sarah should be dead or an entirely different person - absolute wank storytelling despite the amazing groundwork.
gameplay !! 9/10, mwah driving, mwah shooting, mwah creative possibilties, mwah upgrading
story !! 5/10, 5/10 because it should've stopped halfway through and it could've been a mastapiece
Ok fine you convinced me I'll buy it on the sale in a few weeks
[doublepost=1623004690][/doublepost]I probably would have bought it earlier if I hadn't watched the ZP video on it
