Suggestion: Currently, pressing R gives you about ten seconds to do empowered melee strikes (around 5-10), and then you have to wait another ten seconds.
I propose that instead, pressing R just toggles on empowered melee strikes, and you can swing away all powerful-like with Mouse 1 (disabling beam use) until you press R again to toggle it off.

Why it would be worth adding: Because the current mechanic is finicky. You can already beam infinitely at the cost of zero stamina, and melee hardly makes a difference in most S2K shootouts, so it shouldn't be too much of a trouble in that regard to make empowered melee theoretically infinite as well.

Necessary content: Changing the code on the melee swep from being cooldown-based to being toggle-based.

Being rushed by a headcrab, attempting to melee it only to be locked in melee mode for what feels like 20 seconds and watching as a zombine rapidly approaches.

Real ones go and melee the zombines anyway.
Smart ones make sure the zombine isn't in running phase because the fucker throws hands like that

Wait, can't you beam in current melee mode? I tried it earlier tonight and could do it just fine.

For me it prevents me from using the vort-beam until the melee cooldown has ended.

Also, you could change groundpound to only be usable when you have melee mode enabled. I think that would be a big step towards lessening the chances of vorts accidentally nuking everyone around them, because
A) Melee is useless in 99% of PvP S2K situations - thus accidental Mouse 2 click in regular, ranged mode won't cause a whoopsie anymore.
B) Melee mode already gives vort a dual hand glow, and this could be used as a visual cue that the vort can now groundpound at any moment.
