I'm not really sure on the reasons behind these restrictions, but it's so frustrating to bring all this attention to yourself with car jacking a civilian or breaking into a parked car just to get the UI note that it's too difficult to pick. it made sense to me with planes, helicopters and the like, but seeing fairly standard looking cars get this treatment too is grating.

I have a few suggestions on this topic, it's a consider some or none, type of suggestion, but separating them seems silly when it's all looking to tackle the same point. after all it's not my job to fix problems, but I can state what bothers me and offer ideas.

Suggestion #1 - Revert the change

Blunt force suggestion, just reverting to having cars by and large be accessible to pick locking theft again, I'm not sure what problem we were looking to fix with this initial change, so this is still one I'm willing to pitch.

Suggestion #2 - Implement these improved tools the UI prompts ask for
If it's a better lockpick or like a hotwiring kit, something to allow players to take those vehicles again if at additional expense. generic picks already eat durability now, so there's a running expense to car theft, additional tools may make sense.

Suggestion 3# - Lockpicking skill progression
Now we have this levelling reputation system, why not put it to work on lockpicking, almost treat it like runescape with levelling up to get more cars, may well help player specialisation in the criminal field too.

-

as just an aside, I would be curious to hear the reasoning behind the change, it's the one bit of info I don't really know on the topic.

This. I don’t think there was a problem of people routinely escaping cops in run of the mill SUVs.

The chop shop job or whatever its called tying into your lockpicking would be awesome ngl and it'd make sense, you start off with no knowledge on how to lockpick cars, you go do it as a job for some shady guy and as you get better at stealing cars to chop, you learn how to lockpick better cars, hell maybe the shady guy starts selling you better lockpicks or something after you reach level x, it'd make sense.
