Interviewer: Dr. Edward Parker
Interviewee: Robert Grant
Foreword: Robert Grant was acquired from rural mining town “Leper” within the outlands. Leper is stationed near a stable Class IV Portal Storm. Interview takes place in Interview Chamber #03.
[Begin Log]
Dr. Parker enters the chamber, and takes a seat.
Dr. Parker: Good morning, Mr. Grant.
Robert is unresponsive.
Dr. Parker: I’d just like to do a few preliminary tests with you, if that is alright. Firstly, though; can you confirm that it is…
Dr. Parker checks the clock on the wall. It reads 09:16.
Dr. Parker: About quarter-past nine in the morning?
Robert is unresponsive.
Dr. Parker: Mr. Grant?
Robert nods in the affirmative.
Dr. Parker: Good, good. Before we begin the tests, is there anything you’d like to say? You can speak about your life in your hometown, or make any comments you wish.
Robert is unresponsive.
Dr. Parker: Alright, then. We’ll start with-
Robert: I don’t have anything to say, sorry. Sorry, Dr. Parker.[1]
Dr. Parker: No worries. Alright, so, I have here a deck of cards. 52 cards, a standard suite, excluding jokers, of course. What I am going to do is shuffle this deck a few times, draw a card from the top, and then show you the back of the card. I would like you to guess the card I have drawn. Make sense?
Robert nods in the affirmative. Dr. Parker withdraws a deck of cards from his pocket, and shuffles them three times. He places the deck down upon the table, and draws a card, holding it out to Robert, with only the back of the card visible to him.
Robert: Two of clubs.
Dr. Parker places the card face-down beside the deck.
Dr. Parker: Good. Let’s try that again.
Dr. Parker draws a card, and shows the back of it to Robert.
Robert: Nine of diamonds.
Dr. Parker places the card face-down beside the deck. He draws a card.
Robert: Seven of diamonds.
Dr. Parker: Very good. Let’s try something else, now. I will draw a card, and place it down flat on the table. Neither of us will look at it. I want you to guess the card while it is face-down, and then I will take a look at it, and add it to the pile.
Robert is unresponsive. Dr. Parker draws a card, and places it flat upon the table.
Dr. Parker: What card is that, Robert?
Robert: Four of spades.
Dr. Parker takes the card from the table, looks at it, and places it beside the deck. He repeats the prior action.
Robert: Three of hearts.
Dr. Parker repeats the prior action.
Robert: Eight of clubs.
Dr. Parker shuffles the pile back into the deck, and shuffles the deck several more times[2].
Dr. Parker: Now, last test. I want you to tell me which card I am going to draw before I draw it. To make sure you’re not reading from the top, I will spread the cards across the table, and pick a card at random to draw. Does that make sense to you?
Robert is unresponsive. Dr. Parker places the deck down upon the table, and spreads the cards out from left-to-right.
Dr. Parker: Which card will I pick?
Robert: King of hearts.
Dr. Parker picks a card from the pile, draws it, and looks at it[3]. He places the card in a separate pile.
Dr. Parker: And which card will I pick now?
Robert: King of hearts.
Dr. Parker: You just guessed the king of hearts. If you were correct, it’d be in the other pile.
Robert: King of hearts.
Dr. Parker picks a card from the pile, draws it, and looks at it[3]. Dr. Parker is unresponsive for 26 seconds. Dr. Parker places the card in a separate pile.
Dr. Parker: I think that concludes our testing for today. Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Grant.
Robert is unresponsive. Dr. Parker takes the cards and leaves.
[Testing concluded at 16:46][4].
Addendum:
Subject #0032 has been held for further testing. Leper has been quarantined. Outland journalist teams have been informed that Leper was destroyed by a Portal Storm.
Footnotes:
[1]. Dr. Parker has not given his name to Robert Grant.
[2]. Video analysis confirms that Dr. Parker has not added or replaced any cards in the deck.
[3]. Video analysis confirms the card to be a king of hearts.
[4]. Between Dr. Parker drawing the first king of hearts and the second, there is a roughly seven hour period in which neither participant is responsive.
