MILOMIR DAVIDOVIĆ
Untitled-1.png

song
Survival of the fittest has long been an evolutionary maxim taught to Human children in schools. Yet, when extraterrestrial life was discovered, and came to Earth in all of their superiority- few saw the opportunity this presented for Humanity to improve itself…

Milomir did not have an envious life prior to the so called “Black Mesa Incident”. Born to unwed teenage parents in Belgrade, Serbia, Milomir was placed into an orphanage shortly after birth. Hell, his parents gave him up before they had even been discharged from the hospital. The only thing they gave him was a name.

Life in the orphanage was tough, but caring. Milomir lived in a communal dormitory with fifteen other boys on the second floor of the orphanage, and nine girls on the first floor. Many staff worked throughout the day, and the school in the basement was run by a Serbian Orthodox nun named Sister Magda.

Every day was filled with school, chores, and mandatory prayer. Milomir wasn’t particularly religious, but there was one prayer he deeply enjoyed that they had to say before eating each meal. It was called the ‘Serenity Prayer’, it was short, but with a deep message; “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”.

At only 10 years old, life changed for Milomir, and everyone else on the planet. Researchers on the other side of the world made a grave mistake that would cost all of humanity for their folly. The “Black Mesa Incident” opened a portal between Earth and an alien world, causing our home to be invaded by two opposing imperialist armies simultaneously.

The first invaders were a variety of different creatures from different worlds, some feral, augmented by a force of unwilling alien conscripts. It was the second force of invaders, the “Combine”, who were much stronger, disciplined, and professional. Humanity was conquered in all of seven hours.

In almost no time at all, Humanity was brought to heel by these Combine invaders. Milomir can’t remember that time very well, as it was so chaotic, but it didn’t last very long. National paramilitaries the world over were soundly defeated, and Human resistance fighters were easily put down like rabid dogs. Only those who surrendered peacefully were spared. Sister Magda gave the children up for safe keeping, before she herself was killed as a resistance collaborator. He mourned her with deep serenity…

For the rest of his youth, Milomir was raised in a Combine orphanage, more accurately described as an indoctrination camp. The accommodations were far superior to the orphanage he was raised in, as were the meals and education. But, Milomir didn’t need to be indoctrinated- after witnessing Humanity’s utter domination, he was a true believer in the Combine’s supremacy. If Humanity wished to be their equals, he believed, we would need the courage to emulate them.

Milomir rose to the top of his classes, and local Combine leadership selected him for the prestigious position of Civil Protection Officer for City 16 (formerly Belgrade). His job was to work with Combine militants to root out guerrillas and maintain social peace & order.

Seeking any opportunities he can for promotion, Milomir has wisely volunteered for a special assignment that will see him leave City 16 for the first time in a long while. He and some fellow Civil Protection Officers are to ride a drop ship into the snowy mountains. No matter what awaits him there, Milomir’s strength will ensure his survival…
