I've found it's quite fun if you play with people you know.
Especially with custom maps.

I meant the awful artificial delay they put in to try and keep everyone synced up (and the awful slowdowns when it inevitably desyncs anyway)

I use the one over at cncnet, never get anything like that.
It's got a couple thousand people and it runs pretty smoothly, so I'd say it goes well all things considered.
