Didn't see a thread for this so I decided to make one. Everything about camping and outdoors here and all related.

Any good way to get started with camping in the woods? Any good videos / guides on what I need and what I'll do once I'm out?

What kind of outdoors are you thinking?

Shelter stays? Selfpacked shelters? Overnightin? Seasonal trips?

Camping in the UK has so much red tape it's almost not worth doing

I hike instead, it's super fun to get out and just walk like 10 miles with a podcast on, taking in nature and stuff. Treated myself to some gucci gore-tex Montane stuff recently which kept me bone dry throughout my time as Goodwood car show where it didn't stop raining the whole 6 hours we were there

I recommend DarwinOnTheTrail on Youtube. He's constantly doing hikes with camping stops and he's really good to watch for kit recommendations and stuff

legendary mate, that guide is easy to understand for a newbie and pretty detailed still. gonna check his stuff out for sure, thanks a ton x

That’s alright mate.

don’t forget that this isn’t actually an expensive hobby if you know how to spend your money right on the right stuff. The guy in the video does the bare minimum with packing a lot of the time, but does week long hikes on just that stuff. A lot of people fall into the trap of spending a fortune on gear and never end up using it/realise they’ve spent a lot and give up

Shoes are the thing I’d spend the most money on, because with your feet fucked you’re not getting far. My boots are gore-Tex too so they never let any water in

Don't buy Goretex just because people are telling you to

Goretex in the summer is a fucking nightmare, and I don't recommend it. Buy your footwear, clothing and outdoor equipment based entirely on the conditions you will be hiking and sleeping in. Goretex is for early spring/fall and winter, not summer

Pack light, freeze at night. Pack heavy, and you'll be moving slow and steady

Getting a good pair of boots/shoes is a good idea though. I'd recommend starting with tall hiking boots to keep local fauna (ticks etc) out of your skin as well. Be on the lookout for shin splints and downgrade/upgrade to low-cut boots (salomon forces are excellent but very pricey)

Government approved camping zones are kinda cringe too, you can get away with sleeping most places as long as you do it right and have the right equipment

some pics from two weeks ago, down in galloway forest park, it's public land and the only real rule is 'don't litter, don't shite/piss in the water'

I found Salomons fit super super narrow and I've got some pretty wide feet so I opted for some Lowa Taurus 2s in a mid cut and they've done me well so far on the hikes i've done, i've even used them as a day to day shoe because they're so comfy, only gripe i had is they didn't come with a proper insole so I had to source a replacement pair but they're perfect now

but yeah a few people i spoke to in the forces use the salomon quest 4 and say it's indestructible

england land owners get so pissy over you being there, unlike scotland where wild camping is perfectly legal, i just can't be bothered to have to deal with asking the land owner to stay there/getting caught and having to deal with some angry old farmer

i recently picked up a pair of solomons for lighter summer/autumn hikes and i've got big badabonker feet that usually give me trouble finding a right fit in terms of width. Haven't given me any trouble and fit really well

I did the Three Lochs way in May.

Aside from it raining all day on the last day, the worst thing that happened was when we woke up and realised we forgot pan oil spray for our bacon, so I hiked back into Balloch and found a Tesco petrol station which had JUST sold out of fucking pan oil. This was like an hour and a half back and forth for literally no gain.
[doublepost=1627568369][/doublepost]Also, Tarbet is the only fucking town in the UK that does not have a Fish and Chips place seriously.

We were trying to order a delivery to the God damn train station and the only take out place in this town is an Indian Restaurant that doesn't open till 5
