I've heard this may not be easy to do, but I'm gonna make the suggestion just maybe so it's out there incase y'all wanna return to it or anything like that :P

Having a speed limit on the radar would

1) help people, if they're trying to, follow the law and not get pulled over.
2) allow people to fight in their defense against speeding claims, instead of just being told they were speeding and needing to sort of accept it.
3) assist the lspd and any future LEO enforce traffic laws

there is a mod like this so maybe it's possible? i'm not a developer, so i won't pretend to say "haha it should be easy, right?" so it's up to y'all.

I don’t want the speed limit to be declared by a HUD mechanic tbh. Nor do I want a mechanic to help establish a legal defense for a…traffic ticket. And I don’t think this really serves to help the LSPD do their jobs in any meaningful way.

Fighting traffic tickets is a matter of the courts, not using a hud mechanic as an argument mid traffic stop, it gets weird to argue ICly.

LSPD would, or should, have a sheet on hand for speed limits throughout the state. Once city hall actually opens and we can see stuff like laws and all that first hand we’d be able to see that ourselves. Until then it’s kinda like a suck it up and deal with it sort of thing, use your best judgement, etc etc.

The only thing that’d help the LSPD mechanically enforce traffic laws would be a radar that detects speed of an adjacent vehicle. Idk if that’s already a thing, it could be, I don’t have an LSPD character. But a speed limit on your HUD isn’t it imo.

if you can take a turn at 30mph without crashing through 3 cars and into a wall, you can outrun the police

failing that, just drive at the same speed as the NPC cars in the same lane as you
if you have a GTA moment and the NPCs start crashing into people like they tend to do, police wont know who to arrest

You do know modern GPS navigators display the speed limit, right? They can just say „oh my nav was telling me its x mph here”

as a guy who for all of my driving lessons drove a car with an in-built speed limit indicator on the GPS

its very fucking useful because of the sheer amount of school zones in the UK

though sometimes it bugs out and says the speed limit is 20 on a motorway

Cars IRL have radios too, walkie talkies don’t have unlimited range, I can resist being cuffed and wrestle cops on the ground IRL, a bullet to the head is usually permadeath, cops would be sitting outside Nathan’s hotel room or kicking the door in with a full scale manhunt by now, all these old shitbox cars we have to deal with don’t have GPS at all and some aren’t even street legal, and cops aren’t speed running toward every single one-on-one fist fight call in the actual middle of nowhere. I can invoke IRL for so many things in the server that it’d be silly.

IRL is a great reference for immersion, not adding more HUD elements to keep track of whose only purpose is to just…argue with the cops at traffic stops and strip away any incentive to actually think lol when we already have speedometers, physical speed limit signs, and you could just ask the PD what speed limits are.

Just use the speed limit signs on the street, which do exist. Use your best judgement based on the road you’re on (local/city roads vs highway). We already have cruise control that will regulate your speed and it really doesn’t take 150iq to figure out you shouldn’t be going 50mph downtown.

Those aren’t always even accurate anyway, lmao I had one telling me a 65mph zone was a 55. Iva head it tell me the grocery store was a school zone when there wasn’t a school around for miles.

We don’t need more HUD elements, especially is a HUD element that, by the OPs own declaration, is to be used mid traffic stop to argue the validity of a traffic stop. You already got a speedometer, take that and use your best judgement. If you get a ticket and disagree with it go to court. Allow room for ambiguity.

I don’t think cops giving you a speeding ticket that can be factually, objectively wrong, needs to be countered by putting the speed limit right on your screen so you can sit there and go “nuh-uh that’s not what it says on my gps!!!” during the stop. It will actually turn into a constant “speed radar vs gps speed limit” argument every. Single. Time.

If this sorta thing was actually on the dashboard and you could only see it in first person by looking at the physical dash I’d actually be down with this from an immersion perspective, but not more shit that’s on your hud.

The HUD imo should be as barebones as possible with only the very bare necessities. That’s it. Anything else the player should be relying on existing elements in the physical world or their own intuition. Anything more than that is unnecessary and removes from the player, especially more legal civilian minded ones, any reason to actually think about what they’re doing. Roleplay over HUDplay.
