The HL2 one was left up for a while, to give ample time for people to grab their stuff - then it was archived with the other past projects.

I think people just didn't care about the other archives, like WW3 or Experiment, so it didn't really occur to them that HL2 would one day go the same way.

Too bad I can't forget the Frundtech RP forums... they will always be archived in my head

You can CTRL+P and save it to PDF as for one example how to save it, or copy the thread content and forward it to yourself in a forum conversation

Haven't thought of that, the first option is readable but it looks scuffed and one is unable to use the links or music video. Just plain paper and I can't get the second option to work, I don't know the issue

He genuinely doesn't trust people not to go archive-digging to drag shit up on others, especially those waiting in the wings who no longer play/like Neb and would throw it around Discord or whatever.

The archives represent a drastically different time in most cases and anyone poking their heads in who goes digging is probably going to get a negative impression. He doesn't want that, with Neb moving into a new era and away from Gmod.

While arbitrary, I'll bite

Both of these issues are core issues with Nebulous and not something to be avoided by locking every piece of writing behind locked doors.

Sure, you can avoid this to some extent by just not giving them more ammo (albeit i do not know who has the mental fortitude to sift through thousands of pages of forum posts to find some words by a user to laugh at them in a private discord), but to be honest this is not treating the root cause this is treating a symptom. if someone wanted to begin a defamation or derailment campaign on me, they would not need the archives to do so and would just make shit up/bring shit up from my past i mentioned happened and that i cringe of, god knows there's plenty of those moments.

the people who fling shit at neb will continue to do so regardless of if we open the archives or not and i feel as if this preconception of people being unable to fling shit at someone or neb because the archives are locked is one that should not exist because it is simply untrue.

now for the bad image on nebulous - members who join and who are worth impressing are the ones who will garner their first impressions from ingame and not from the forums. people who fling shit at nebulous will continue to do so and will in turn infer a bad image of the community regardless of if the archives exist.

There is nothing to "get to the bottom of"

This is how things have always been, all of our previous projects were also archived. FTRP, WW3 and it's various iterations, Experiment and so on. Feel free to think what you want of the matter or think that HL2RP should be an exception but you can't really deny this is how we've always handled the archiving of our past projects

it was dumb then and its dumb now - hl2rp is just obviously more significant to people than ftrp (lol), experiment (also lol) and ww3rp

A middle ground could be a archive that contains only the threads made by people who agreed to them being publicized again, so those that are worried about their old stuff being used against them could simply keep their stuff hidden

Only issue with that obviously is that it would be a pain in the ass for @Blackquill and whoever else still has access to the archives

Or make the hypothetical archive work like the Applications subforum used to, where you can only see threads made by yourself

While Alex has made no secret of his desire to move on from Garry's Mod, I don't think its anywhere as insidious as this.

I do somewhat understand the desire to make your community presentable to a new demographic of players that are not familiar with the ins-and-outs of Garry's Mod's history (if that was even an additional motivator behind Alex's decision, I can't and won't assume). I was very keen on trying to clean up TnB's forums to be more inviting to new players before I resigned. There's lots of nasty stuff in those old forums.

Really so long as people's requests are fulfilled to have specific threads moved to public where they can be viewed again (perhaps an additional public archive, where people's threads can be moved to upon request?) I would be content. I'm not hellbent on some crusade to try and change people's minds about the archives with unkind language and purple dots under my posts.

Oh boy you've done it now

That is an absolutely fucking stupid conclusion to come to, we've been hosting the newest iteration on HL2RP even during it's darkest times despite there being no incentive or obligation to considering us (head staff) have no interest in GMOD anymore. We've spent countless hours and years of our lives on that game and even though we don't care about it, we know that our community cares about it

All this because we archived a fucking forum board of a project that was discontinued (That being the old iteration of HL2RP). How has it been this long and some of you still haven't grown the fuck up with this shit?

You realise who pays the bill that keeps HL2RP up in the first place correct? You realise that even though it's not our project we've still had to deal with the shit from it?

In short, fucking grow up. If you want something from the archive - ask nicely like an adult instead of throwing a temper tantrum on our supposedly dead forum.
