Hey guys just poked in for my yearly review. 9 years, fucking kill me.

All I can say to the "Staff are cowards for not acting" thing is I recieved actual, genuine threats surrounding the server to make things go certain ways when I was SD and even long after because people knew I had sway.

Not jokes, not funny memes, but actual threats that "I will ruin things by making x do y which will tank things and people will leave if you do not reverse z decision."

That's how invested some people were in things and how willing they were to do anything to keep themselves where they were. So if I'd have put anyone in here, circa seven years ago, into the position of having to ban some of the most popular people in the community (and possibly their friends) for something that the majority didn't see in the same problematic light (say, playing Neo-Nazi characters or whatever)? I'm positive they wouldn't have gotten banned either.

But then, I don't think any person in this thread would have followed through at the time. People didn't have the same gut reaction to things that happened back then as they do today. Even that (incredibly fucking cringe) roster was probably something that never saw the light of day until it got shared recently.

I look back now I'm much older and wish I'd done some things differently, but I couldn't have realistically fought the server culture or transplanted views that only came with maturity and age, long after the fact.

i still remember Rabid's first time on HL2RP on like, RelentlessGaming and he walked up to my cop and was so confused about everything. man that had to have been like 10 years ago now

the mad part is without blackquill randomly accepting him into CAB as a deputized position the entire course of lemonpunch/nebulous probably would've changed significantly

It is truly a sign of the times when I don't know who you're talking about because I can remember six different people who did this.

I remember watching you for several months just guard the citadel back in 2018.

I'm ngl my favourite task as OTA was that. Not sweeping, but guarding. You could interact with people after certain century-old traditions were lifted, you could also listen into some drama, so yeah sweeping was like "monkey like bullet" but that's as far as it went, probably more hyped as a group thing than anything else.

You'd think the nazi symbolism would be ironic considering it was attached to the OTA, who are almost unanimously recognised as irredeemable, undeniable villains

Insane that some people looked at that and thought unironically "I want to be that"

I think looking back into it, it was low-key ":o" to find out while talking to some people were not going by the whole "transhumanists vs humanists" IC political debate. Like honestly believing being a cyborg-esque soldier that serves brainwashed, a high-key fascist government would be a cool thing.

Many silly things were done back then too, but I'd never hold any of it against them because I know the majority were way young, and every kid is easily impressionable and WILL say stupid shit. I know I did, I wish I even remembered what kind of crap I pulled to whomever I did to apologize, but they would probably have forgotten about it just like I did.

Among all this silly stuff we have weeded out actually mean and politically colorful people, but as @Rabid said, sometimes it was hard to act, mainly because anyone would understand the consequences (even if unjustified, coming from some sort of "extortion") of punishing depends on which individuals. In fact, such decisions have been taken at times and the consequences have been felt, and that's after working and discussing how to better do it.

Regardless, I enjoyed my time playing and staffing in Neb. There's been really cool moments, I've met a lot of cool people. This kind of stuff (like the funny wheels in OTA roster) is something I didn't care or even notice before, and I notice now, but what can I do about it nowadays anyway? Not much really, so I keep as a memory that I enjoyed my time here, and even remember some cool events, situations and funny things, and just dump the rest.

I think in retrospective we see a lot of things that were obviously in front of our faces but we didn't see, and then go "oh, so THAT's what that was" lmfao.

not related to your point which I agree with, but i think the whole purpose of the half life 2 meta-narrative is "what if space empire saw us like we see a beehive" - resources we can put in a box and also eat and sometimes the bees die and we supplant a queen. we dont really assign morality to this.

I think it's a shame that some people really wanted to join OTA to be nazi/nazi like. I mean they look goofy sometime tacticool peeps for an evil alien race. I think a lot of OTA fun part was the raids and the general ability to experiment with them. I think my biggest project with OTA was making the Sierra-6 events with @Uranio and overall trying to shift OTA culture to be well actual characters. IF I were a bit smarter, I would have realized motherfuckers were walking around with nazi shit in the rooster, but my ass got taught by US education.

regardless OTA I'd like to believe that OTA was turning on a new leaf the few ending years I know me personally with @Uranio we tried a bunch of things to keep thing healthy with the community and OTA and I think some of them worked out nicely. I don't know how many nazi's I've interacted with and those I have I hope they realized how stupid it sounds to be a nazi AND especially in a Gmod server. Sometimes it's fun to just be a dumb evil alien grunt and not make it an ideology thing especially when you have a lot of young people that don't know any better.

Oh also posting here since Idk if it got lost or not some of the sierra-6 dossier for one of the OTA events cause it was peak

the way OTA was handled in the last iteration was probably my favourite,
Mainly from there being more tiers of the faction with different levels of dehumanisation attached to them, plus civil protection characters eventually progressing into those ranks, there's a really unique horror in watching a character you spent time with before as a civ pro slowly lose their humanity infront of you until you no longer recognise eachother.

Making joining OTA more of a point of fear for my civ pro character was probably the best experience I had roleplaying with the combine factions.

I know some people didn't like the odd "truce" and shifting dynamics between reb/civ/cp/ota but I really enjoyed a lot of the interactions I got that would generally have never happened otherwise. I also liked hearing about those interactions.

nah fuck those people

there were many cases where the plot was obviously veering for CPs and Rebels to have a temporary uneasy cooperation in light of a more dangerous, pressing threat like a giant antlion nest

people were pretty up front with the fact they OOCly didn't like it and so continually kept trying to shotcop to end it

I don't like the fact I'm now forever tied to that shit
If it makes you feel better I will always remember you as the 12 y/o who ERPed on his rebel femchar in i17 on Lemonpunch, in the slums building when all of the EU's went offline and the server was quiet. I think it was f2b. I think

That was my first character there, running a shop in Westpoint and seeing that shit
