If it's your first time you are certainly best off being a player. See what other people do, that's how you learn, then you can work on DMing.
I was forced to start as a DM.
I didn't even know what D&D was when I started, and in school, I went up to my friends and said "Let's do a choose your own adventure game!"
So we did a zombie survival thing.
Started off with 4 people, and I was the DM.
Within 3 turns, 3 out of 4 people were dead because they did 100% stupid shit like opening doors full of zombies and trying to fight their way through them. The smartest of my friends actually survived for about 2 weeks and crossed most of America in a truck, eventually stopping at a prison. We both got bored and stopped at that point.
I've never been a player, ever.
