every alien film post alien 1, even prometheus has been set on a moon rather than a planet, covenant is the only one that's set on a planet and it supposedly pre-dates the first alien film. i reckon whatever the fuck happens on this planet is what causes the distress beacon to the nostromo, perhaps judging by the wheat it's an engineer's attempt at a terraforming experiment or to create a livable environment for the aliens, seeing as they worship them for some reason.
