far cry 5 is a below average game considering the company it comes from that only gets a free pass because of its title
change my mind
clearly they lost the ways of the original and one of the better far crys 1&2, also dropping some of the crafting that came from far cry 3 4 and primal for more ammo. the transition to the perk system was well implemented with easy means of getting perks points through mini-puzzles, online play and through simple progress of challenges, which took what was solid about the borderlands game as implemented it into Far Cry. While there is a lot of lacking gameplay elements, the coop alone makes up for quite a bit as well as the not-so unique, but welcomed step into a warped religious militant group in one of the least densely populated places in the united states. far cry 5 is not a below average game, considering there are plenty of games that I've played that are well received, yet i don't find them entertaining enough to play it through.
while you can argue that they've been given a free pass because of the title, I'd argue they were given a free pass because of the plot and smooth gunplay mechanics mixed with a fun coop that can be played with friends as you talk shit about who got detected and spoiled the bonus for clearing the outposts. the arcade mode also gives a lot of player freedom to create their own custom games and the multiplayer is actually pretty solid. there is a lot of mechanics to be critical of, such as the lack of solid bullet mechanics, but the plane/helicopters are smooth as they are fun and there really isn't that much to complain. the proper implementation of the silver bars system gave players an option of finding them, paying for them, or simply waiting until they could unlock and buy the guns with in-game currency which is a move in the right direction by ubisoft.
while the clearly isn't as realistic as far cry 2, I believe they've moved away from that especially considering almost borderlands esque comedy and personality found in the game.
I do have gripes about the lack of real character development of the antagonists. It would've been a lot better to have it more akin to Saints Row where you follow the quest lines in each area and it naturally explains the antagonist through cutscenes and what they're doing but it seems as if they may have gotten lazy and implemented a step program of abduction, which wasn't bad, but it could've been implemented better. perhaps tying the good deeds that reward you with points go towards your resistance level, rather than the boss progression.
tl;dr above average considering far cry 4 & primal were below average and its superior to the original unless you're tripping on nostalgia on the first. The second was fantastic and the third was great.
Have I convinced you its average or above yet?
