Serious The Epic Games Store is good for gaming, change my mind

I'mma repost my last argument from the Outer Worlds thread and continue it here from now on.

Let's be realistic: it's not about bringing down the online store monopoly that is Steam to these fucks, it's literally just a case that they're going to be paid for putting their game on a shittier platform at the expense of us, the consumer. It's not something we should be endorsing or promoting because it only harms us.

Sure, it might cause competition between online stores which might bring about lower prices for us but in the meantime we're going to be forced to use platforms that are basically fucking "still in progress" when we could just use a finished platform that actually works extremely well, is intuitive and well designed.

Ask yourself for a moment - if you'd please - WHY Steam has had a monopoly for so long. Origin, Uplay, Epic and the Windows Store have existed for years except no one ever wanted to use them because Steam has always been the superior platform for the consumers. It's why so many people are angry about the fact Epic are now paying publishers to fuck the consumers. Sure, some of it is out of laziness but some of us - like myself - hate it because almost every other platform is fucking trash in comparison and makes me want to flay myself instead of using them. The windows store is almost the only exception to it, as far as I'm concerned, though the Xbox App still fucking sucks.


As an addendum, I will happily use another platform when they have more or equal to the amount of features as Steam does. As it's been said here, Valve work horrifically slow, so if Epic actually give a shit about competing against them, then sure, assuming they put their minds to it, it shouldn't be long till they catch up, but until then I'm not downgrading on platforms. Also the fact they're trying to win us over with paid exclusives over actually just being a better platform for consumers is why I'm annoyed.

I disagree heavily. Not a single person I know had or has any difficulty trying to navigate any of Steam's UI. Meanwhile, we all almost always struggle with Uplay's UI, The Xbox App or fucking Origin.

You're right, changes don't happen in a day, but forcing us to downgrade ourselves to play an exclusive for a year isn't a good start. I'd understand if the Epic store was on par with Steam in terms of its functionality and it just wasn't getting any users because of Steam, but it's not the case - Steam is just far more advanced and Epic is jumping the gun.

Uplay has trash profile management where you can only change your name once a month and changing your picture barely - if ever - works. The store always returns errors whenever I try to put money into it to actually fucking buy anything, simply telling me that the store isn't available at the moment - with no error code so I can try to fix it.

If it couldn't fucking launch the game I'd not even bother calling it a platform, Slim.

I just want all the games to be on the library of my choice. I don't want to have a divorced game library as someone with 200 steam games.

I will never look at any other game store as a plus when I'm over 1600$ in on this account.

Steam is the future of VR.

I won't bring up the lack of features in comparison to Steam, nor the alleged info grabbing or w/e because I really don't care about either of those.

I also can't blame Epic Games for not having a system ready to compete with Steam, but I do agree with the idea that they should be spending money on developing their platform before paying off publishers to try and get people to migrate on over.

Let's just let both platform cut deals and compete with the game developers, not the marketplace itself.

You pretty much explained the reason why Epic has to resort to exclusives in order to get people to use their platform. You're already complacent with the large library you have and wont be changing, probably even if there's another objectively better platform; it's too much of a hassle. I'm not saying EGS is objectively better, but they still need some pull factor for their platform because feature parity isn't strong enough.

Remember that these are timed exclusives to help with the adoption of EGS, not full exclusives. Again, they've partnered with the Humble Store to also sell the games that show up on their platform and Epic sees none of the money if you decide to purchase a game on Humble instead of EGS. Epic is by no means a monopoly on PC titles, I don't think a monopoly is what you think it means.

I'm all for another games store like GOG but very few people use it in comparison to Steam even with similar games for sale and feature set; they have no reason to switch when they're so integrated with Steam.

If Epic's plan was to have a barebones store and just yoink games from a bunch of publishers and leave it at that, I would agree with you. That is not the case here, work is being put into the platform constantly. It's looking pretty good for a product that's only a couple months old.

I don't really understand the rhetoric that Epic is only trying to harm the consumer, is it because it's lacking "user-oriented features" at the moment? Of course it is. They need to make sure the core stuff is in place to make it attractive enough for publishers/developers to actually want to utilize the store at all. Once again, it's not like they're going to avoid putting these features into the store. Check out their roadmap, it lists a lot of things that people are whining about: cloud saves, user reviews, social improvements, etc.

Epic is paying publishers to bring more choice to the consumer - it doesn't seem like it now but remember that these games are not full exclusives. Nobody uses Origin because it's for EA-published games only. Nobody uses Uplay because they're for Ubisoft-published games only, and it comes bundled when you buy games on Steam anyway. Nobody uses Windows Store because you can probably find the same games on Steam (outside of something like Sea of Thieves which is also an exclusive, but Microsoft gets no flak for that one (?)).

Epic can't start with feature parity out of the gate, that takes a LOT of time and money with no guarantee that anyone uses it because they can just get their games on Steam instead. Their tactic is to get an established user base and funding to gauge whether or not it can stand on its own and not stagnate like literally every other PC gaming platform.

Funding from a Chinese investment firm does not equal funding from the Chinese government.
The launcher was never a piece of spyware.
They got more money from Fortnite's success than funding from Tencent.

They aren't being "funded/controlled by the Chinese".

I've been a long time supporter of Steam, but I hate all the confusing updates done to it. I still miss the circa 2010 UI.

The only thing I really care about is having all my games in one place. It's easy to use the steam overlay to talk to friends and stuff. I need to alt tab Apex Legends to answer messages and it's kind of annoying. This pain will only get worse with more launchers.

How else are they gonna attract people to their platform though? Everyone would just rather use steam anyways considering how convenient it is to never make the switch. Plus, you can just add it as a non-steam game and never touch the epic launcher again if it's that much of a problem

hopefully the end result is that you can choose which launcher/store you want and use that instead; open standards are the solution to this issue.
