do small events/storylines at this point because anything else is shit or becomes shit

a server with one big overarching plot is fine

but you have to be ready for new people to join and not know what the fuck is going on AND be able to get them invested

I mean just sign up shit like most events here are except for more than an afternoon, like a week or several weeks.
It worked well for ~ANOTHER SERVER~

No point in running communities anymore.

The larger ones absorb the players making it almost impossible to gather a dedicated and consistent player group
Ngl I feel like thats always been the case to a degree, just it used to be that either there'd be communities directly ddosing one another or there'd be splinters and wars (Necropolis comes to mind). Or for the most they'd just die in a month or two and fall apart.

Most of the big servers bar Neb are from that sort of era I think but you aint wrong either - if you wanna 'break in' its better to do what ANOTHER SERVER did and make it episodic and stuff.

This here.

This is why cyberpunk failed in my eyes.
They ran it like a joke when they got 50 to 60 people daily and it crashed and burned and now became a slice of life rp server is cyberpunk setting.

I wrote about Anthology here if you're interested:
https://steamcommunity.com/groups/gca1/discussions/0/1777136225038316912/

What was interesting is that recently I noticed another episodic style roleplay server from years ago while researching Novabox. It sounded similar to the recent Anthology series too:
A big announcement on 22nd May revealed episodic roleplay, with 'Episode 1 - 2010 - The Deep Freeze' described: "In this scenario, citizens, who have been kept in holding by the combine for months, are airdropped into a seemingly arctic facility. Upon arrival, they are greeted by a band of Conscripts, who woefully inform them that they are some of the last remaining humans on the entire planet-- the rest of the world being an arctic, radioactive wasteland, where no life, except for those of which “saved” by the combine, could ever support themselves. Despite the doubt in the citizen’s minds, they all peacefully settle into their new home."

Also mentioned in the announcement was 'Episode 2 - 2011 - Abandonment' and an explanation of the system: "Each episode will last up to an OOC week-- with the end of the episode marking the beginning of a new city, and thus, a new experiment. However, even when a city is wiped clean, there is always the .01% that live to tell the tale, or rather, to spread the truth. Thus, the seeds of doubt are planted, and the pursuit of veracity begins."

What's also interesting was the fact that Novabox tried starting a HL2RP server in late April 2016. There's a context of it being a relaunch, and that there was work being done leading up to it, but I doubt it's a coincidence that (similarly to After Flash) they were trying to get the server up quickly because LemonPunch had just ended.

But ofcourse the majority of the ex-LemonPunch playerbase rallied behind nebulous. I love how so many active members have 'Joined: Apr 26, 2016' in their profiles.

What did it do badly? And can I quote you on that?

fail to get me interested in the server even though 15 or more people tried to advertise it to me

the website was just a fucking mess and it felt like it was built from the start to be a business

That reminds me.

I used to be staff on some other servers and this one stuck out.

I remember Hammerfall Gaming being really big on donation rewards.
Their 40k rp though was fun but it got corrupted by donation perks.

People on nebulous think premium lockers are bad but there's much worse :/

You can quote me if you want, I was there on the launch day for it.

Novabox tried to emulate SCG's business-oriented mindset and had some galling gameplay choices (Air Exchange was a thing in-lore, meaning gasmasks were required for daily life) and thus the whole 'need filter to live' mentality ensured that any semblance of staying outside was quickly scrubbed for practical reasons, which quickly fostered circlejerks. Killing someone became as easy as just slipping their mask off or breaking it out in the streets.

Not to say that you'd want to stay out in the map, anyway. It was a cobbled together shitshow, Kermerd (aka Dremek) had ripped off a dozen maps (even i17 prefabs) and shoved it all together, resulting in the abomination known as City 2. It's so terrible that despite a dozen 'workshop made' fixes I'm still able to abuse certain entities to kill people, should someone have the terrible idea to actually host it. Even the map elevators were a prefab taken from a 2011 gamebanana upload.

Kermerd didn't know how to run it and his chosen 'staff team' were inept, if not downright malicious, and the CivPro faction turned out to have been plucked from day one supporters so naturally it was downright ridiculous as well.

Nothing notable happened on launch aside from a small gathering on a main road, who were quickly - and pretty much instantly - gunned down by a throe of bored cops. I left soon after, and from the first hand accounts I heard, the server was dead within the week population-wise and lost all traction.
