i've never played any of the dmc games but where should i start? what would be the best order to play them in, and is there any editions of the game(s) that will make my experience better? any shows or content unrelated to the game? i know there's an anime adaption of the series somewhere too

I have the 1st and 3rd games for PS2. I never really enjoyed them that much but definitely prefer the 3rd over the first.
Never really cared for the narrative or anything, but the fighting was fun

To be fair DMC 3 is canonically the first game and they're like... nineteenish in that game whereas they're almost fifty as of DMC5.

3 > 1 > 2 > 4 > 5 is the canonical order for the series now, but DMC 2 is a game you can skip as it had a horrific development history and is shitty to play. Other than that the animated series which is ten episodes long and fills in the gap between 1 & 2 IIRC (@Blackquill?) is a good thing to watch.

There's some mild inconsistencies with DMC1 because they hadn't filled out the story much back when they made it, so one of the reveals and the reaction to it doesn't make as much sense as it made before DMC1 was retroactively made DMC '2'.

Yeah its definitely worth it. You can play this game with almost no context either since there's a "history of DMC" thing in the menu anyway.
