gmod likes to make me join twice

basically;

• launch gmod
• try to join the server
• locks on retrieving server info, bout half way
• game goes unresponsive for 3-5 minutes
• little window says i timed out
• i rejoin
• joins me perfectly

its like i have to time out once before it'll let me in at all

• restarting the game obvs doesnt help
• done a completely clean install of the game, doesnt help
• cleared cache, doesnt help

dunno what to try other than that

This happened to me for ages and was fixed when I got my new PC. Apparently the 64 bit + addons was so intensive it just timed me out.

disable fastDL and make sure you have all addons installed

go fullscreen if you play in windowed/windowed borderless

reduce settings

if none of the above worked it's either your network settings or your hardware

Try loading the server's map in singleplayer beforehand, then try joining
During Awakening some people had to try connecting like 4 times before they could join

If it just prevents you from connecting try a VPN or restarting your router. Alternatively you can force your pc to throw the IP and request a new one in command

happened to me constantly but after purging addons and redownloading them plus getting some new RAM it was fine

i have a solution for this my bearded grilling friend

at least for me, i can connect straight to the server if I
A: do not join through a friend straight from desktop
B. run the map in singleplayer then join the server
or C. have my computer on for some time before I even touch gmod and join the server

My CPU is archaic (intel core i5 8th gen) so it might be that. good luck anyway
