In all honesty, looking past the nostalgia of that game, it doesn't hold up to modern standards. The missions are punishing and the freeroam only fun because it's bad. GTA 5 is no better. The missions and story are lazy, the freeroam boring and the multiplayer is almost unplayable. The amount of pay to win sadists have turned the multiplayer/online mode range inducing. You can't do the online missions unless you empty the lobby for someone is going to blow up your shipment of coke with their guided missile flying car bullshit. The grind is simply not worth it and the whole game is pretty microtransaction guided and boring. Personally, GTA 4 is my favorite. The multiplayer is dead, yes. But the story makes up for that. It's a good story. Also, the freeroam is enjoyable at best, but it's not the reason I play the game. <3
