It's also hugely empty for most if not all the map, making it boring to go out and about.

I take it this event will either result in a handout of guns to both sides or this will become largely melee2K? Considering rebels aren't toooo well armed but then neither are the conscripts.

Firearms are suppose to be rare for the first few days and will be balanced out as the event goes on, S2K is only used since most of you may know that roleplaying shooting as a server wide event will go horribly wrong and will lead to many complaints.
