Here's a convo starter:

What's the most emotional you've gotten playing HL2RP? Neb or otherwise. And I'm not talking like pissed off cause your char got pked but like invested emotions in a story arc or the loss of someone elses character.

Once cried when some cops I brought to the rebel side to communicate a ceasefire because they didn't want to fight anymore were stripped of their goods and then summarily executed
Realised then and there that no good people existed in the Resistance and considered blowing the head off the guy who was about to execute one cop, and every time I think about it I regret not doing so
I felt responsible for them dying and as well I felt I had been lied to by the people I had allied myself with, so after that I was working with the Resistance not out of belief of the people I was fighting with, but out of the belief that I had no other option for the fight as a whole

I've got a few more stories if I remember them

Not sure if this counts as emotional but a few months ago on Willy Networks I got asked to join a team of rebels to ambush a combine squad
We ended up getting ambushed ourselves by that squad though and out of the like 6 people we were I was the only one who survived by hiding in a vent and I was fucking terrified sitting there and hearing the cops and OTA walk around outside.

I experienced hope when that Breen speech kicked in at the end of City 24

** CCA.S07-SWORD.02.40100 draws her pistol from its holster. She holds it tight against her thigh.

[CCA-MAIN] CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179: --091, we've got two in custody. If intelligence doesn't want them, I'll prosecute as I see fit.

** CCA.C13-UNION.04.03210 steps up to 607 and tries to rip the mask off her face. "Won't be needing that shit."

** Her mask's ripped off. Etelka has a white medical eyepatch with the Combine claw over her left eye. Her face has bruises that're starting to bloom and puff up her face. **

** CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952 shambles across.
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.

CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179: 799. Lets take him to detainment. If he doesn't expire before then--

(CCA.S07-SWORD.02.40100) ** For some reason, the muzzle of 401's pistol is abruptly stuck in 032's face, held across 607's chest. **
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.
CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952: Elke--

[L] ** CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179 glances towards 401.

** CCA.C13-UNION.04.60738 stiffens.
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.
CCA.C13-UNION.AdJ.61677: -Jesus Christ...

** CCA.S07-SWORD.02.40100 reaches up with her off hand to tear her gaiter down. She twists on her heel, still holding the pistol out at 032, to bellow something at 091.
CCA.S07-SWORD.02.40100: [YELL] What have you DONE?!
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.

** CCA.C13-UNION.AdJ.61677 slowly shifts- Ready to aim his own weapon. The only reason it doesn't rise is the clear impression that 401 will fire if he does.

** CCA.C13-UNION.04.03210 rests his hands on his duty belt.
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.
CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179: I've kept us alive, is what I've done. The malefactors would see us reduced to half alive slaves. I'm working to keep you-- AND THEM --
[L] ** CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179 gestures between the duo of mutineers, with a hand.

CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.
CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179: Alive! Safe!

CCA.S07-SWORD.02.40100: [YELL] ALIVE? FOR WHAT?
** CCA.S07-SWORD.02.40100 practically screams; her voice is scarcely strained to this volume and it suffers for it.

CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: Death in duty is the highest glory.

** CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952's right hand sluggishly rises up. He inches a step closer to 401, trying to guide her pistol away from 032. That hand -- both of his hands -- are shaking.

** CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203 deviates from his mantra again. Second page of the manual.

** CCA.C13-UNION.AdJ.61677 slowly raises the AR-1, like he's trying to avoid being spotted. Those eyes don't leave 401.

CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952: [WHISPER] Don't.
CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952: [WHISPER] Please.

CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.
CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179: To see the stars in a few generations. To make use of what they've ABANDONED US WITH!

** CCA.C13-UNION.04.03210 eyes 799, hands still on his belt.

** The muzzle of 401's Walther begins to tremble as her grip tightens on the weapon. Her finger tenses on the trigger. It hangs there for just a moment before she abruptly turns the weapon on herself, swinging it in an arc up and in front of 607's face to plug it in to her own temple. **
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.
CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179: Progress has been stalled, but not stopped--

CCA.C13-UNION.AdJ.61677: -Shit!

CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952: Juma--
** CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952 lunges his entire body forward. He's not even aiming for anything in particular -- the motion alone activates so many instincts that he tries to lock her arm in a grip and tackle her to the floor.

[L] ** CCA.C13-UNION.04.03210 watches the movement, shoulder checking 607 as 401 pulls their weapon. His free hand flicks the pin off a concussion grenade simultaneously.
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Death in...

** CCA.C13-UNION.04.60738's eye widens, gaze straight on the gun. She futilely wrenches against her restraints, shoulder-checked and inadverently pushing into 401.

** CCA.C13-UNION.AdJ.61677 has finally taken aim- But it seems poor timing, given 401's chosen the same target. He shouts mutedly against the pop of the concussive- Stumbling back with hands over his eyes.

** 799 wrenches 401's arm around. The gunshot is lost in the concussive bang. Blinded, 799 can only feel her suddenly become a lot heavier. **
[L] ** CCA.C13-UNION.04.03210 is hit by the shot 401 fires instead. Blinded and concussed, his biosignal rings out all the same.
[DISPATCH] Lost biosignal for protection team unit: 03210. Remaining units contain. Last ping near: [Commanders Office].

** CCA.C13-UNION.04.60738 falls. She's not sure if she was hit, yelping out as she's blinded and concussed.
CCA.C13-UNION.04.60738: [YELL] GAK--

** CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952 tumbles to the floor. He's stunned from the grenade, shaking his head as if he can just shake it off. His hands tap at the ground and try to pin 401's arms wherever they might be. He scarcely hears the biosignal.
CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952: No-- no-- no!

CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: [WHISPER] Glory.
[L] ** CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179 eats the flash, and stumbles onto 102's back. She lands on him and hard.
CCA.C13-UNION.SqL.09179: [YELL] --GUH-- WHO THE FUCK DID THAT?!
CCA.C13-UNION.03.10203: Glor--REEEH.
(CCA.C13-UNION.04.03210) ** The unit responsible is leaking brain matter and blood onto the white snow. **

** CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952's breaths are amplified through the mask. He's breathing like a charging rhino. When his hands arent pushing down on something -- anything -- they're trembling horrendously.
** CCA.S07-SWORD.02.40100 spasms in the snow, trying to wrestle free of 799's grasp. She's alive.
(CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952) ** Feeling 401 move, he tries to cinch his arms around her. His feet kick out as he skids across the snow, presumably somewhere near the fence right nearby. **
CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952: HHh-- Ahh---!
(Finnish) CCA.C13-UNION.02.79952: [WHISPER] You're alive--! You're alive-- For God's sake-... thank God you're alive...

this happened in january on TnB and wlil probably remain one of the greatest roleplaying experiences ive had in 14 years

edit:

after months of rising tensions, a full month of playing this character, his general view on a warlording civil protection group rapidly eroding and all of that boiling over with a shootout that left a dozen people dead and dying on the floor, all of this happening 60% organically* without any admin event-work whatsoever, powderkeg moment completed a transformation for this character from sardonic and desensitized to broken and hanging on to threads

*faction drama caused the faction leader to resign and in the leadership vacuum the remaining cop players split between Combine-loyal goons and people who wanted to defect to the resistance

All the dee pixel stuff I was involved in, really. There was quite a long and extensive event series he ran at one point about delivering the first pregnant woman under the suppression field away from somewhere, off to somewhere safe. I believe there were 5 of us to start with, and 2 of us by the very end, it did the works for me, and it really should've taken the cake given how much of my character's roleplay it came to define, but there was another very random one-off he did at one point that seemed to hit harder for whatever reason.

This was an event completely hosted on the main server, with no signups, just a random thing that dee pixel set up and thrust upon us. It was about this synthetic woman. (He ran blade runner-esque human synths as part of his stories, it was dope). Can't even remember her name, but I do remember the whole plotline surrounding her. She was being hunted by all sorts, the cops, the cab intelligence agency - third parties, what-have you. Mine and I believe chronos character happened upon her, and intervened in one of these events to save her life! She darted off. We ran into her once more, and again, and eventually she learned to trust my character. We sorted out a safe-house for her, we had lots of lengthy conversations about trust, the future, moving on - and the general story turned toward us finding a place for her in a smuggle-away from the City proper, where she'd actually be safe a few days from then.

And then, one day I logged on, and I was either handed a note, or it was a radio transmission, or someone just told my character, that she had died. That was that, she was dead. This whole plotline cultivated, all the steps taken from frightened thing to self-actualized person, and she died, on a whim, while she had all the hope in the world of seeing it out, and a glint in her eye. It's stuck with me for a long time. It was the perfect way to end that event. It was succint, and masterfully crafted all the way through by dee, the character was believeable in ways that very few characters are, event or otherwise.

I think it's something about the existence of expectations. When you enter into an event through the forums with signups, you understand pretty much entirely what you set yourself up for. If you're not dumb, things are going to go your way, you're settled in for an emotional ride, your view is centered; and while you get thrown off course sometimes, and subverted, you generally understand that there will be a conclusion. A one-off, in this capacity, thrust upon, with no real idea we'd just randomly stumble upon it, seen through to its conclusion, and a total abrupt stop; it was perfect.

edit:
anything involving any single blue wolf character always got me too. he has the very same capacity for making extremely believable characters, in that they are normal, grounded characters. one of them was this older jewish woman, totally ordinary, appreciating just how insane the world around her was. i think with how young everyone was for a lot of hl2rp, it was quite difficult to sort through all the characters and not find an abundance of cool hip swaggy young men who are jaded and shoot gun good, so stand-out prospects would shine all the more.

i think really, what will get me at any point is truly self-actualized people, who you can really empathize with the plights of, because they're just that grounded, even in a very not grounded setting or circumstance.
