the best way to play these games is as a sneaky agile ninja, swiftly dancing around your opponents, poking them full of holes whilst they try and swing their two handed 5 pounder weapon at you. Combat is my ballet and the battlefield is my stage.

Atop all the other, splendid advice everyone else's already given?
I'd recommend learning the basics of CQC as well - not even MGS-memeing you. Helps you not panic when you're disarmed, and you know what your foe might do if you've disarmed them. Plus, you pick up easier on how you can dodge attacks by moving your upper body around. Hell, sometimes, even jumping over enemy's attack. Try fighting both fisticuffs VS fisticuffs and fisticuffs VS weapons to learn both aspects.

I'll be honest, I enjoy using the Polehammer (And long large two-handed weapons). I can't win in speed, so I basically let the enemy attack too early or attack while I dodge their attacks - striking them as they miss

With my polehammer, I usually just back up and strike if I know they're gonna miss, or just morph after riposte and bonk them in the head
