After going to america i understand why some of you feel like you might need a gun to defend yourself from literally every other cunt who also has a loaded gun at the ready

but applying that mindset to places outside of america, especially europe, is pretty stupid. It’d be ridiculous for someone here to have a gun to stop a burglar, to the point where you’d definitively get more jail time than the burglar if you’d actually use the weapon

i dunno, i'd rather have a gun just incase some nutter comes into my house high on bath salts for whatever reason

not really about jail-time, more about not getting stabbed

You can't trust the cops to defend your life or your property. If someone busts into my house, they can kill me with their bare fists. I'm not a strong person, and a 6'2" man could do w/e he wanted with me. Guns are the equalizer. I'm not going to have a sword fight with a burglar. The gun isn't just for someone who's armed, it's for anyone who wants to do me or my loved ones harm.

The concept of defending yourself from other people with bad intentions is universal. If you trust your police force, great. If you're happy with grabbing a knife and rolling the dice that the person you're attacking doesn't get the upper hand on you, great. I don't see how the concept of having something to protect yourself at a longer range is stupid though?

call police and wait it out

force is allowed if used to defend yourself or others, but only in a proportional manner

LOL wait it out. I can't believe people are unironically replying saying that this is preferable to castle doctrine.

Are break ins not common generally in Europe? Because I've been broken into about 3 times in my short time on this Earth, and I've caught the person in the act twice. Now I'm waiting for the 4th time lol.

So what happens if someone breaks into your house? Like do you just watch while he steals your shit?

We call the police

I'd say it's also way harder to break into someone's house the way things are built here, and at least in Spain the majority of people live in flats so beyond the first floor (and in some places even the first floor as there usually exists a ground floor where local shops and stuff go) it's already a challenge to try the windows. The doors are also reinforced and such, too, though anyone with advanced skills can open them as you may guess.

On top of that you may use force to defend yourself, but simply not deadly force or unproportional force.

With the points stated above, break ins are already rare due to the nature of how houses are built and the likes. People can also choose to hire private security measures (alarms with quick response and direct call to the police, etc).

Personally I have no alarm in my flat, merely my door, and nobody has ever tried breaking into our house, not even since my parents bought the flat (and that's already 30+ years).

you gotta remember that every neighborhood/town is different, i'm not gonna compare break-ins of malmo with break-ins in stockholm, etc

plus, from my experience, cops take fucking forever to come over, you just have to do things on your own half the time because they're inconsistent, and I'm sure the same is applicable in other countries

It's a joke, honesty

A man's home is his castle and should be protected as such

at least in Spain

Never said it applies to the whole of Europe everywhere
[doublepost=1581767638][/doublepost]Also forgot to say but for one, the National Police in Spain is really effective and tends to arrive quickly and tackle suspects through an extended network of undercover cops and investigators. A call to the police will earn one or two cop cars on quick response in about 2 minutes, sometimes.

unironically this

i don't believe i have the right to use a deadly weapon on a person that is taking shit from my home, simple as really. Even if I have insurance and the person gets caught and I'd get all my things back, I'd rather lose 100 000 kr worth of stuff than any life being put into danger, or even worse, lost.

if someone comes in trying to murder me, then sure i'd grab a knife from the kitchen or bring out the peashooter and pretend it's a real weapon, but i don't see a random rdm man running into my apartment any time soon

Me neither. If I catch someone in the act and he runs away or surrenders, I'm not going to chase him down and/or kill him. The only time I'd use deadly force is to protect myself from someone breaking in, or if I happened upon a criminal and got the drop on him. You cannot use deadly force to protect property legally, and it would be immoral to do so. Castle doctrine is more so about protecting your house and life, than your property. If someone was breaking into your car, and you were not in your car, you could not justifiably use castle doctrine.

if someone comes in trying to murder me, then sure i'd grab a knife from the kitchen or bring out the peashooter and pretend it's a real weapon

So the issue with this is that force escalates. If someone has a gun, and they enter your house with the intention to rob you, having a knife or a gun will escalate the situation to where the person would have to meet your deadly force (real or not) with his deadly force. A toy gun is escalating it without the ability to use the force you're presenting.

though ive never had my flat broke into my block of flats is broken into by tramps all the time, and theyve tried to mug me a good few times. theyre nothing to get a gun out and start glacking them over, most theyll ever do is pull a syringe and give you hiv

when im suss i just go out with this piece of quick fit pipe and a heavy ass valve on the end [the blue collars choice weapon] seems like itd only escalate things if you pull your six shooter on coked up tramps but then again i cant put myself in the shoes of bubblegum or someone living in a place where guns are common, namaste
