part of these games is the fear of the unknown, and that unknown very vastly extends to players

You are literally living in the
apocalypse. You are literally at the threat of being
eaten alive. You are - quite literally - living in the
zombie apocalypse, where most of the things you see walking around are attempting to kill you and eat you. You are literally
playing on a PvP server.
If you want a hugbox, go play CDDA and just close the game each time you die, so that you can just reload your last save.
