Personally I bought a camera then just signed up for a couple weeks course at a college near where I live, I ended up not even finishing the full thing because I felt it was moving to slowly for me.
Practice on your friends and whatever places you wanna take pictures of, if you just wanna do urban or landscape or something it's easy.
If you want to do model photography like me sign up for PurplePort. You can put your own casting calls or up or sign up for one of the 100s of castings that models are putting up. A lot of the time they'll already have a studio or a hotel room set up so you're probably spending like maximum 100 quid for a few hours of their time. All the models I've worked with in Glasgow have been really passionate about what they do and it's really fun working with other people on creative projects. Make sure to always give and receive a reference for whoever you work with as it makes you more attractive to work with. Between my casting call and just people I've "networked" (🤓) with I have a list of like 30 or so people who wanna work with me. Would be bigger but Glasgow isn't a big modelling town.
It's more expensive if you want to do a studio shoot by yourself. For my bigger projects which I've had published, I organised a model, the studio, a makeup artist, props and an outfit. Probably cost around £400
Once I move out I'm gonna set up a home studio and try and start a business around it, but as a hobby its a lot of fun as long as you're prepared to put money into it.
