tfw sitting in computer science a week before summer break this year and as a piss take I ask my north irish computer science teacher “ever seen an attack by the ira?” and he proceeds to tell me his father was a traveling priest who took him along to omagh whilst he himself went to china and so my teacher was there when the the omagh bombing happened and is only alive because his brother was taking ages cleaning his bollocks in the shower

yeah he told me when the bomb went off it shook the roof and when he went down to the town he saw people getting whatever they could like paper to throw and cover the bodies of dead spanish kids about 6 years old that were on a school holiday that got blown up

the priest there at the time had a mental breakdown because of it years later and left the church

My grandmother's brother served in Ireland at the height of the Troubles to support his family and while she's never told me a lot of what he said she did tell me he wasn't really the same when he came back and that he'd seen some pretty horrific things over there.

The one story I do have is that at one point the IRA set a bomb off trying to catch the next patrol out that morning (which happened to be his) but it went off too early and took out a bunch of people on their way to work and stuff and they were the first ones there and apparently it was horrific. He'd have nightmares and shit even when he came home for a long time.
