Everyone told me I was crazy, that I should pick something else, that my plan would never work.

Did my plan not work? Certainly.
Was Visby under a 10-year siege for the first hour of the session? Certainly.
Did I do it anyways? Absolutely.

While everyone else was looking at screens and pushing buttons,
I was GAMING. I was LIVING.
AND THAT'S WHAT MATTERS

Konungariket Sverige
KINGDOM OF SWEDEN
1489

GUSTAV VII SJÖBLAD
-LIBERATOR OF SWEDEN-

In the time of mid 15th century, the crown of Sweden had been languishing under the Kalmar Union for nearly 50 years. Danish supremacy was upheld through force - and the tyrant Wittelsbach sought to impose medieval serfdom over his Swedish subjects. The people prayed for a saviour, and one man answered their prayers - Gustav VII, of the Royal House of Sjoblad. Born into military aristocracy, Gustav was well placed to organise a rebel force within the country and, in the spring of 1446, he declared his government in a suburb of Stockholm and marched on the capital.

He crowned himself Gustav VII - clamming continuity from his own ancient bloodline of Swedish nobility, the 7th of his family to hold the name.

The Muscovite Tsar, who had been waiting for a signal, intervened and peacefully led his forces through the Finnish provinces, towards the aid of the Swedes. The Duke of Gotland, Johan I, secretly supported the rebels in their fight - and hampered the Danish response to the insurrection. United together, the Danish and Norwegian loyalists were smashed at the Battle of Lund and by 1450, after years of campaign, the Peace of Stockholm was signed. The Kingdom of Sweden was granted independence, along with the Duchy of Gotland under Johan I.

Thereafter, there was peace in the realm. An alliance between England and Muscovy cemented the Swedish state's survival, along with overtures towards the state of Brandenburg - looking to emulate their military practices.

In 1457, a request from Duke Johan I to establish a Baltic trade republic, with hegemony over the weakned Riga and Livonian Order, proved tempting; to deny their shared rivals valuable Baltic coastline. The war proved to be a costly disaster; the Swedish fleet was destroyed, Stockholm sacked and the Gotlandic capital at Visby was besieged for six long years in a brutal island war of resistance. Finally, in 1463, the Peace of Riga granted the Gotlandic Duchy control over the southern half of Livonia and Riga.

This peace would last a month before the Order of Teutonic Knights stormed into Gotland's territory. The merchant kingdom was unwilling to mount a defence of its lands, and King Gustav had given up on the idea of a Swedish client duchy in the Baltic. Gotland was left to its fate and would be annexed by a Polish-Teutonic partition in 1467, after Visby fell to the knights.

Gustav VII, Liberator of Sweden, died of smallpox in 1473.

GUSTAV VIII SJÖBLAD
-LIBERATOR OF SKÅNE-

Gustav VIII ascended to the throne in 1474. His reign marked the start of the Wars of Reconquest that would dominate the foreign affairs of Sweden for the rest of the century. Gustav launched the successful campaign against the Danish overlords of Norway, defeating them at the Battle of Oslo, and then again - with English help - at the Battle of Dal. The Danish fleet was defeated by 1477 and Copenhagen was occupied by Swedish forces.

The peace that followed ceded all remaining Danish lands on the Swedish mainland to Gustav's kingdom - along with severing Denmark's route to the Atlantic, delivering the islands of Orkney, Shetland, Faroe and Iceland to Sweden's western ally.

Following this glorious success, Gustav's dynasty was legitimised by Pope Sixtus IV in 1479. For the first time, his bloodline was recognised as a royal house within Europe, not merely an elevated member of the nobility.

Riding on a wave of popular support, Gustav decided that now was the time to return Gotland to the kingdom. The Teutonic Knights, who had occupied the island since 1467, were now at war with Brandenburg - and local nobles had once again delcared themselves an independent duchy, although they lacked foreign support.

Sensing weakness, Gustav launched an invasion in 1480 - but poor coordination and a lack of ships meant multiple journeys across the Baltic had to be made to ferry the Swedish army, allowing the Gotlandic garrison a slight numerical advantage. The Battle of Visby, which was launched in the dead of night, surrounded and destroyed the invader camp, resulting the the death of 7000 Swedish forces. Humiliated, Gustav was forced to delay his conquest and build a superior fleet. Two years later, in 1482, the Swedish once again landed and were able to defeat the Duchy of Gotland.

As retribution for their defiance, the city of Visby was destroyed and its population were expelled to the northern Sami province of Lapland.

"Who's for Dessert?", by Maurycy Sakowicz (City of Pinsk, graffito)

The Muscovite War Machine marches on, lead by the mad blind Prince and his son. From rampant, unimpeded militarization to forceful land grabs, the Russian city state oversteps it's bounds with each year it is allowed to war unimpeded. Their so called claim to all Christian Orthodox land is nothing but one more lie their over-eager government espouses- the partition of Poland-Lithuania and the destruction of multiple cultural heritage sites of Eastern Europe are clear signs of this. Can such actions be ignored by any true Catholic nation?

Muscovy has, either through outright or merely implied violence, solidified its ownership of all other city states within the Russian region. Recent reports from an anonymous source details unofficial deals with middling Central European powers detailing the borders of a grandly titled "Russian Empire". Rarely does a city state have such delusions of grandeur. In this case, however, this ambition is coupled with a cutthroat attitude and a disregard for the life of their subjects- a worrying combination that all of Europe should take note of.

Though they have helped the insurrectionist Swedish from overthrowing their rightful Danish ruler, they have no true allies. Indeed, were it not for the brutal manner that they dealt with Polish resistance fighters, were they not ruling through sheer might and fear, their citizens would rise up against them.

What is next for the nation of Muscovy, then? Unconfirmed reports tell of further plans for their conquests, namely the saving of the Orthodox people in Constantinople, and the usurpation of the claim that the Holy Roman Empire makes to being the true Roman successor state. On a more personal level, the Prince is a noted racist and has on more than one occasion compared the steppe nomads that roam the East to cattle and army fodder. Only time will tell if he puts his devilish thoughts into actions. For now, we are the people of Eastern Europe are at the whims of the evil machinations of the overgrown Russian state- a faith Muscovy wishes for it's neighbours, in the far or near future.

reminder that you can play as a literal peasant's republic, Dithmarshen. existed for like 0.02 seconds before everyone knocked it the fuck down IRL, but they're basically peasant communists
Flavour Text: "Governmental form where peasant communities hold the power themselves and elect rulers from among their leaders."- they don't have the nobility faction either, which is funny.
