cool idea but kinda limits you in regards to your character trade until you get a book
Yes but currently limited as it is, this creates a somewhat automated system whilst still having a roleplay element instead of lumbering more duties on the staff team to do stuff for people iygm

OTA POV;

> 10 fps
> mag constantly empty
> fog covering my sight
> vortigaunt hits the edge of my shoulder, half way dead already
> grappling bugging me into walls but i am still hittable
> grapple not triggering
> getting stuck on terrain
> running down from lighthouse to the first cop at the semi-lowest rock, no cover
> save him
"there is a cop stuck in the pit"
> run in with the hunter, mfw no problem
> hunter dies straight above me where my extraction point is, i am still in the pit writing /me's
> grapple out praying to god they are not covering the death pit
> semi-sprint walk because carrying IC
> no reinforcements at my terrain, theoretical rambo rule engaged
> get out saving the cops
> arrive back at the lighthouse almost meeting god again to a pixel missed vortigaunt beam
> run up to RP the external console at the substation to engage the new parts that are mounted, running outside into the sights of snipers thrice
> survive

Meanwhile, in the Lighthouse...

also, I believe we need to stop stigmatizing map swaps as these "big dedication" things and just say fuck it, experiment, see what the playerbase gravitates to the most when it comes to this server

yeah we'll make mistakes, but in the process, we can establish a more base map rotation that we can rely on, that we know works, because we've tried it before by then

nebulous has a horrible, horrible outlook on maps.

they arent big dedications, exactly as you say; the quicker we learn just how easy it is to drop everything and move to another map, the better. if we stopped being so uppity about it, we'd realise that you could literally plan an event the day before - or even same day, if you're as radical as i'd be about it - and swap the day after. dont get attached to maps, don't stay on them for long; it's a system that genuinely would work wonders. it doesnt matter how good a map is, u get bored of it eventually and quicker than you think; we, as a community, have just learned to tolerate maps being around for ages and we need to stop that now. in my personal opinion, being on a map any longer than 3 weeks is insane and shouldnt be done.

its a topic i could rant on about for literally hundreds of words but ill stop while im ahead and just finalise by saying this; its, in my opinion, actually a matter of life and death for this iteration.

While we're at it, can we stop going across the world like we did previously? I might have been """""loremaster""""" back in 2018 or 2019 or whenever I don't really remember, but I genuinely think a huge chunk of the timeline, especially after I was extending it to include at-the-time present day events, was fucking ridiculous. "Let's take an entire city's population and throw it across the planet into the Azov depot, and then let's ferry them all the way to Japan. Why? I don't know!"

I'm sure people will cringe at the anecdotes but my time at TnB's HLNA felt much better (i swear im not biased because i was admin) because it was a much smaller scale located within a single city. Sure, we experimented with radical maps like RP_downpour, RP_Eastcoast, and other things due to an expected smaller population, but it was stil a cool thing to do to experiment -- the point, though, is that we remained in City 107. By mapping out the city's obscure districts and subregions, it felt more lived in.

Edit:

I should mention that, if the Sea of Azov ending takes out across the planet, that's fine. I think that once we get into a city, though, we should flesh out that city extensively instead of bouncing across the world like a ping-pong ball.

yeah we're roughly still remaining within eastern europe atm, even post depot, im not gonna dump people across the planet and it's part of why ive made the lore so vague, which is to reduce interest in areas that i might not be planning to go to. the content just isnt worth writing out

This is a good decision. Cindy and I and the rest of the lore team at TnB wrote large amounts of information regarding the US, since that was the main setting of the server, but we kept a city list in the admin subforum. It was empty. We'd fill it out as we came up with ideas, and they'd usually be as shallow as "City 111; Cairo, Egypt; Incredibly unstable, military law in effect" and nothing else at all because someone might have mentioned it once or twice in-character. Lots of international lore we simply didn't care about because there was no point in mentioning it. The only times we did make exceptions to this quasi-rule were to supplement an event set in the past. An example:

A never-finished event was involving something called the Candemir Crisis. In short, a local resistance cell had performed a massive uprising, and taken the city administrator, a man named Candemir, hostage. The event would serve a dual purpose: Explain some backstory for the city and its conflicts, and help flesh out our ideas of the Combine Overwatch Transhuman Arm (which I was leading at the time). The end result would have been that Candemir was faking the hostage scenario entirely, and was instead fully complicit in the uprising of the city. At the time, OVERWATCH soldiers would have been very early stage transhumans, given only genetic therapy in that canon, and thus effectively just veteran super-soldiers. If I had actually run the event, I'd probably have let people play those characters in the present day as seasoned long-time operatives or something.

yea lets stay on a map for so long that people find all the min-max spots possible and learn every inch of the map instead of

like

moving on when there realistically wouldn't be any more resources/battles to fight

Vortigaunts are proving incredibly powerful at long-distance combat. I think I scored my first ever Hunter kill as a result of the line of sight - and cover - I got from atop this rock.

And some of us greenies even scored kills on the lot at the lighthouse. How something like this could be balanced remains a tricky question, since the Combine don't have a lot of counters besides just sending bigger Synths - but those kind of counter everybody.
I'm having flashbacks from other outlands event from the previous iteration taking place in the valley map.

Gonna be making a post to summarize the lighthouse event for those who missed it, collect photos and videos in a single place, and for a place to put feed back. Seen a lot of good feedback scattered around to touch upon for future events.

also i would like to remind the vortigaunts that you never checked the pods in the substation before sabotage, effectively dooming the ones trapped in there ic
I did do that, though.

When I saw the event message that the core had to be drained of its power, I left the five other Vorts to deal with the core and ventured outside to get to the Arc. I RP'd both with the console and the prisoner pod I saw inside the Arc, as well as mentioned it in /help. However, the only event responses were about how the core was going critical and that we would need to teleport back out using the energy drained from the core. So, I just ran back inside and did just that.

I will say though that this did come with its own issues - like I can't count the number of times people put effort into setting something up that was map-specific IC only to have the rug ripped out from under them with a sudden change (or two) out of nowhere which forced things to be delayed or scrapped entirely.

Likewise, TnB was never in a position to change the base formula the way moving to other "cities" where such things could be justified and built up did. One of the best parts of Helix 1.0 was when we went to C8 and made it gang-run and dipped the whole thing in an entirely different coat of paint with different dynamics.

That was never an option at TnB because all of the maps existed in the same city-space.

But I do agree that for this iteration and concept in particular, sticking on maps isn't going to work well.
