The trip to sector 17 is going to be a long one, even with the union's transport systems rushing people and resources across the continent as fast as possible.
And naturally there'd be no break for me on this trip, they've assigned me to guard one of the transport carriages.
It's not a result of bad luck that has me guarding the interior of their stalker transport, for the next several hours I'm due to stand cramped amongst these things, their fragmented and suppressed mumblings feel like they're talking amongst themselves, it's all gibberish now their ability to grasp and produce basic sentences has long been stricken away from them, it feels like whatever's left in there is trying to rebuild some amount of consciousness.
The 'fresher' ones gibber the most to themselves, sometimes my relative silence in here is broken by one them snapping and screaming out, at least with my baton I can quell them and keep them quiet for a while. I read most of them as lashing out in anger, but... there's a token few in here that feel like they're trying to break down into a sob, but their minds lost the ability to relieve their anguish like that long ago.
It's the older ones though, you can see it on their skin how they've become ever more pale, their skin even more stressed and wrinkled, the metal on their forms were never sleek, but you can see the service life on some of them with the wear on their components, worn, scratched, a few of them had their metal discolour from the extreme environments they were subjected to.
They're dead silent, they never lashed out, never screamed, whimpered or even mumbled a disjointed word to themselves. these ones were broken physically by the union long ago, but their spirit broke second, I don't wish to wonder how long it took for what's left of their consciousness to dissipate.
They truly disturb me in a way that goes beyond my recognition.

I'm well aware of the 'choices' I had been given when they detained us.
I didn't need the results of failure presented to my face
but I get the message.
now get me off this goddamned train already
