i'd argue a lot of it comes from perpetuated social norms, if your family's done something for generations and there's little incentive to change, then why bother? this goes for both war-torn and stable nations

also, not all of the middle east is war torn, you'll probably still get killed for being a homosexual in saudi arabia, but they haven't fought on domestic soil since the qatif uprising in 1979 so it's little to do with that

i blame the house of saud and the muslim brotherhood for taking over the intellectual scene in the arab world, the alternative were the ba'athists and other nationalist movements sure, but at least they were somewhat secular in nature

In the middle east, they most certainly don't have the same resources as we do around queerness. Comparing countries that do, to countries that don't is ridiculous. The cultural difference is stark enough that you should realise this.

with the advent of the internet it's becoming increasingly easier for folk to access these resources, there is still a stark cultural difference and that'll take time to change in even the most modest of ways, but it's there

i do find it kinda darkly ironic on how the roles have been reversed though

alot of the homophobia in the middle east (and africa) can at least be partly blamed on colonisers exporting strict binary views on gender/sexuality to colonies which have slowly became deep-rooted, and now this bigotry (among other things) is used as justification to "bomb the savages" etc (not referencing anyone on this thread, i mean in general) while western countries are supposedly the good guys in regards to lgbt rights

some months back we got new neighbors (a gay couple at that!!!!!)

today it was like 95 degrees in freedom units (35 in communist units) and i had them over to enjoy the pool and i cooked out on the grill!!!
